20 Best Hikes for May in Switzerland

Where to hike in Switzerland in May, with scenic spring trails by lakes and rivers, countryside walks, low-elevation mountains with early wildflowers.

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy. Note that prices and opening times may change without notice.

May is a beautiful time to hike in Switzerland, with the wildflowers blooming and waterfalls roaring.

But you must choose your trails carefully, as many mountain areas are closed in May, waiting for the snow to melt. In May, we focus on lakes, rivers, lower elevation mountains, and countryside wanders.

Below are our favorite hikes for May that we’ve done over the years.

Note: These routes are popular with Swiss locals, away from the tourist crowds. If you are checking off a bucket list and want to visit the most famous areas, see my Top 10 Spring Hikes in Switzerland.

What to expect in May on trails

Please note that in spring, trails may not be at their prime. Trails can be muddy and covered with debris. Fire pits probably aren’t yet stocked with wood. Some trails might still be covered with snow.

So use common sense and be flexible. If you’re hiking in April, some of these aren’t open yet so check my list of April Hikes.

This is one of the first mountain areas to open for hiking, usually in mid May. You can ride a cable car up the mountain, then short walk down to the Aescher cliff restaurant for lunch.

If there is no snow or ice, you can do a steep hike down to the Seealpsee. But the safer version is to ride the cable car down, the hike up to the lake via the service road.
