If you visit Switzerland in November, you’ll need to choose your mountain destinations carefully.

Most Swiss mountain areas close around mid October and take a break before ski season opens in December. During this break, cable cars aren’t running, restaurants are closed, and trails are often impassable due to rain, landslides and snow.

However, some mountain railways in Switzerland remain open in November, often just on weekends and in nice weather. Here is a list of mountains scheduled to be open during this time in 2025.

What to expect in November

In the mountain list below, I’ve included links to suggested hikes and current conditions.

Please check actual opening times and trail conditions before heading out as weather (especially wind and snow) can close everything at a moment’s notice. Trails may be covered in mud, landslides, snow, and/or ice so use extreme caution during this time.

In addition, restaurants and mountain huts may be closed during this time. So do not expect to eat along the trail. Bring your own food and drinks.

Note for public transport: After mid-October, some buses reduce or stop service to certain mountain areas. So check the schedules carefully before making plans.

Near Zurich in November

1. Säntis

Open year round, short maintenance break in Jan/Feb

Mt. Säntis is a mountain peak at 2502m in eastern Switzerland. At the top, you can enjoy the viewings from outdoor observation decks, safely enclosed with fences.

On a clear day you can see mountains in six countries: Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Germany, Italy and even France.

Even if it snows, you can still visit Säntis and either enjoy the view through big panorama windows or dress warmly and walk around the snowy observation decks.

Location: Säntis cable car station –  Schwägalp 791, 9107 Schwägalp • Bus stop – Schwägalp, Säntis-Schwebebahn

2. Hoher Kasten

Open year round, short maintenance break in spring

You can easily reach the top of this tall mountain near Appenzell with a cable car, which runs year round. At the top at 1791m, there is a large outdoor terrace, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Alpstein mountain range and across to Liechtenstein and Rhine valley below.

The restaurant at the top rotates so you can enjoy 360 views while you eat. If there is no snow, several beautiful trails start here.

Location: Hoher Kasten cable car station – Dorf 22, 9058 Brülisau • Bus stop – Brülisau, Kastenbahn

Open: The cable car is open year round, except for a maintenance break, usually from end of February to end of March. See current schedule.

3. Ebenalp

Daily through 23 Nov 2025

The cable car from Wasserauen to Ebenalp is scheduled to run daily through end of November, in good weather.

During this time, the Aescher cliff restaurant should be open and you can do the short hike from the cable car station down to the restaurant, where you will get fantastic views of the Alpstein mountain range. Check restaurant status.

mid October at Seealpsee

Without the cable car, you can hike from parking or train station up to the Seealpsee lake (see trail map). This trail follows a service road, which is steep at times but not dangerous. The restaurants at the lake are closed in November, so best to bring a picnic.

In November, I do not suggest the trail from Ebenalp down to Seealpsee because mud and/or ice could make that trail even more dangerous than normal.

Location: Ebenalp cable car – Schwendetalstrasse 82, 9057 Wasserauen

Current conditions: Ebenalp timetable • weatherwebcams

4. Pizol

Bad Ragaz gondola open November weekends – good weather only

While most of the Pizol resort usually closes in mid October, they often run the Bad Ragaz gondola on November weekends if there is good weather and no snow. Check Pizol website for updates.

At the top, there is a restaurant and large area for you to wander to catch panorama views across the Lake Lucerne region. Learn more about Mt Rigi

If the weather is dry, you can optionally hike on the panorama trail and catch the mountain train farther down the mountain (Rigi First for Vitznau or Rigi Kaltbad for Arth Goldau).

Note that the cliff walk and Rigi Scheidegg cable car are usually closed in November, so you cannot hike the full summer panorama trail.

8. Stanserhorn

Daily through 23 Nov 2025

To reach this tall mountain near Lucerne, you ride a vintage funicular then a special cable car where you can stand on the open-air roof. These mountain railways usually run daily through the last weekend of November. Since this is a popular tourist destination, we suggest you purchase a “boarding pass” in advance for a specific day/time to avoid long waits.

At the top, you’ll find a restaurant and an observation deck. From there, you can follow a short path to higher viewpoints around the peak.

9. Stoos – Fronalpstock

Weekends in November until ski season starts

Stoos is a beautiful mountain resort south of Lucerne. You can easily reach the Fronalpstock viewpoint without hiking. First you ride a funicular train (or cable car) to the Stoos alpine village. Then a chair lift up to the viewpoint.

At the top, there is a fenced viewpoint over the cliffs, a short trail along the cliffs, playground, and restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating.

view from Stoos Fronalpstock

During November, the Stoos funicular is closed for maintenance on some weekdays and you may need to ride the Morschach cable car instead to reach Stoos. Check website for maintenance schedule.

I would not plan to hike on the popular ridge trail in November, as the Klingenstock lift won’t be running and any snow or ice on the trail would make it too dangerous.

10. Mt Pilatus

Daily year round

Mt Pilatus is one of the most popular mountains to visit near Lucerne. At the top, you’ll find a large observation terrace, short hiking trails to various viewpoints, and a restaurant.

In late October, Pilatus closes the cable car for two weeks, for maintenance. During this time you can reach Pilatus Kulm via the mountain train.

When the cable car reopens, usually the second week of November, the mountain train closes for the season, not opening again until May.

11. Titlis

Open year round, except 2 weeks maintenance break in early November

Mt Titlis is a tall mountain peak near Lucerne, with a visitor center built on the glacier. You can easily ride to the top on the world’s first revolving aerial cableway, an exciting and beautiful ride.

At the top, you can walk around on the glacier snow, explore an ice tunnel carved into the glacier, and cross a suspension bridge. If you find the temps too chilly, you can also enjoy the views through panorama windows at the restaurant.

If there is no snow, you could hike to the Hundschopf viewpoint, which looks over the cliffs to the south end of the lake. In summer, we usually hike to the Niederbauen Kulm peak, but that would be dangerous if there was any snow or ice on the trail.

Zermatt in November

In November, most Zermatt mountain services are taking a break as they prepare for ski season. But the two most popular tourist attractions, Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, stay open so tourists can enjoy Matterhorn views year round.

Here’s what to expect at these locations in November.

16. Gornergrat

The Gornergrat is a mountain viewpoint high above Zermatt at 3135m. You can easily reach this viewpoint with a cogwheel mountain train, which runs year round.

The mountain train drops you off near the Gornergrat hotel shown in the pic above. You can wander around on the paved walkways to different viewpoints of the Matterhorn and Gorner glacier.

Because of the high elevation, the Gornergrat mountain typically has snow in November, so make sure to wear warm clothing. Note that at the Riffelsee lake, you may not be able to see the lake if it is covered in snow. Also, do not expect to hike during this time.

  1. Hi there,
    I hope you are well!
I absolutely love your page- it is incredibly detailed and informative- thank you so much for making it available.
I am visiting a friend in Besançon, France next week and had planned on exploring some of Switzerland’s more remote countryside and hikes. Little did I realise that so many places would be closed during November. 🙁
I didn’t know if you could recommend any of the most spectacular hikes/areas that may still be open at this time? I am unfortunately dependent on public transport to get around.

Thank you so much and I look forward to your response,
    Anna
