What to wear and bring
The temperatures on Mt Titlis can be cold even in summer. The average temperate in summer is about 5 – 10° C (40 – 50° F). Inside the ice cave, it is colder, a constant temperature of -1.5° C (29° F). Best to bring a
Checking the weather on Titlis
To check the weather forecast, we like using Search.ch and MeteoSwiss.ch. Even if the summary forecast shows rain, it might only be raining in the early morning or evening. So best to check the detailed weather animations for precipitation and clouds.
We also suggest checking the Titlis webcams the morning of your visit to make sure the view is clear. You don’t want to pay for this expensive outing if you can’t see anything at the top.
Accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs
The Titlis gondola, cable car and viewing terrace are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. You do not need to contact them beforehand. But if you wish to visit the glacier ice cave with a wheelchair, you do need to inform the ticket office who can make arrangements for a staff member to assist you.
The amusements on the snow at the top of Mt Titlis are not accessible. The trail around the Trübsee at the middle station is obstacle free and suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs.
Photo story
Getting to Engelberg and Titlis station
By car or train, you travel through this spectacular valley to reach the Engelberg village.

At the Titlis base station, you can purchase your tickets and board the gondola up to Trübsee.

At Trübsee, you transfer to the rotating cable car shown here. This pic was taken in December, when all other mountains were also covered in snow.

Arriving at the glacier at Kleine Titlis
At the top, there is restaurant, an ice tunnel in the glacier, and a big area on the glacier where you can walk around.

Snow is a novelty for many tourists, so you’ll probably see people throwing snowballs and laughing in delight just to touch the snow.

Once, we visited Titlis in July during a heat wave and there was an area set aside for kids, with snowball scoops, a snowman target, and shovels for snow digging. It wasn’t very cold up there, but the snow was wet and slushy. It would have helped to have waterproof shoes and maybe rain pants for our child to keep him from getting so wet.

Soak in the views! In winter, it’s icy cold up there, so dress super warm with a hat, gloves and good winter boots.

The suspension bridge
From the restaurant, walk across the snow toward the big tower until you reach the suspension bridge.

There’s no extra fee. Just walk across and walk back.

In summer, there is a connection on the other side to the ice cave, but in winter the door and stairs are covered in snow.

In summer, there is a connection on the other side to the ice cave, but in winter the door and stairs are covered in snow, as shown here.

On the bridge, there is a photo booth. You can scan your ticket, pose for the pic, then go pay for the pic at this office.

Ice Flyer
The Ice Flyer is a chair lift uses for summer skiing. For an extra fee (CHF 12 in 2020), you can pay to ride down and back up on this chair lift, only worth it as a thrill for tourists that have never seen snow or ridden on a chair lift. I really enjoyed it but my ticket was free because I was doing a site visit for a tour company. I wouldn’t pay for it myself because I ride ski lifts many times a year.

Glacier Ice Cave
From the restaurant, you can enter a 150m long tunnel cut into the glacier. There is no extra fee to visit the ice cave. The floor is ice and very slippery. So walk carefully and hold onto the hand rail. There are a few ice sculptures along the way. It is -1.5˚C inside, so make sure to have a warm jacket, even in summer.

Lots of silly photo opps around this place. Indulge!

Amusements at the Trübsee middle station
In summer, you can stop at the Trübsee middle station and walk around the alpine lake. It has a theme trail for children with various activities scattered along the trail. It also has a large playground.
See details for Trübsee lake walk.

In winter, you can stop at the Trübsee middle station for sledding. There is a short sledding hill shown here with a magic carpet bringing you back to the top. There are usually innertubes and sleds to use for free.

In winter, there is also a groomed winter walk around the frozen lake.

Thank you for your very useful website! I have a question, can we rent suitable clothes for playing in the snow from there (boots, gloves, pants, jackets etc)? We’re coming from a hot country and I don’t know what’s suitable for the snow and don’t want to buy stuff just for one day.
You might contact the hotel or tourism office in Engelberg to inquire about clothes rental. I’m not aware of this.
Hi,
A regional family ticket of the Bern region gives children free entry?
Thanks
I’m not sure which pass you are referring to. If you are referring to the Bernese Oberland Regional Pass, it gives you a half-fare discount on the Titlis glacier visit. Children who have a Family Card with the pass ride free with the parent using a valid pass.
Hi Tanya,
I really love your website. Extremely helpful for my upcoming trip. I will be visiting Mt Titlis in first week of May and I realised it is kind of in between season. Do you happen to know whether snow activities are available?
I want to let my 5yo girl try out some snow activities – snowtubing at the Glacier Park (but I am not sure whether it’s open in May), or try out skiing or snowboarding (I see the rental shops are closed by end April).
Thanks in advance!
Hi Wendy. Glad you are finding my website helpful. According the Titlis website, the Ice Flyer chair lift at the top of Titlis is open for winter season through 22 May 2022. It is closed briefly from 4-8 April 2022 for maintenance. https://www.titlis.ch/en/info/general/Timetables (click on the “operating times for walkers” link). However, the page referring to the tubing accessed by that chair lift says the tubing run is only open June to Sept. https://www.titlis.ch/en/activity/detail/TITLIS_glacier_park/4485/60738 It’s very confusing. I suggest using the chat feature on the titlis website and asking them directly. They are usually very helpful.
TQVM for your very informative page about Mt Titlis. Great help for planning my Swiss trip next year.
