Zurich has many indoor swimming pools that are fun on any cold weather day year round. Most of these indoor pools have a lap pool and shallow “non-swimmer” pool for play time.

Some have fun extras like waterslides, splash pads for small children, heated outdoor pools with massage jets, and saunas.

Our favorite in Zurich city is the Alstetten pool, which has diving platforms, a water slide, heated pools with massage jets and bubble loungers, and bouncy pads at designated play times.

16. Hürlimannbad & Spa

This thermal bath and spa is right in Zürich city, a convenient option if you want to relax and warm up on a cold day. Our favorite part is the rooftop infinity pool with a view of Zürich city, particularly nice at sunset.

We also like the Roman-Irish spa ritual, in which you visit a series of rooms including steam baths, pools with massage jets, quiet lounge rooms, and more.

Although children are allowed, it’s not our favorite with kids as all spaces are quiet and focused on relaxing. With kids, we suggest Thermalbad Zurzach, about a 45 mins drive north of Zürich.  It has a rowdy lazy river that kids will love, a regular pool and splash pool for little kids.

We also like Solo Uno thermal baths near Basel, which has cool features like a lazy river, scented steam baths, warm rain room, cold waterfalls, etc. See also thermal baths with kids.

Indoor indoor play halls are a great place for kids to run off extra energy on bad weather days. These places typically have trampolines, climbing equipment, bouncy castles, slides, and ball pits among other amusements.

Near Zürich, our favorite for little kids in Springding and for older kids Trampolino or Monkey Town.

Zurich has several indoor tennis courts that are open to the public. You can reserve them online at GotCourts.

There are several indoor sports complexes (not private clubs) around Switzerland that have indoor sport courts, like badminton, tennis, squash, etc. Near Zürich, we like Sihlsports in Langnau

Amusements

24. Adventure Arena

Adventure Arena has 20 rooms, each with a short mental and/or physical challenge that your team tries to complete in the allotted time (usually about 3 mins).

25. Escape the room

Escape the room games are a classic and there are lots to choose from in the Zürich area. Most recently we did the Submarine room at The Escape near the Zürich main station and really enjoyed it. All instructions there are in both English and German. We’ve done a few at ActionWorld west of Zurich, including the Tomb, which a group of six teens liked.

The cost usually ranges from CHF 35-50/person for a 1 hour game. Most games are best done with 2-4 people. Some Escape Rooms offer team challenges where large groups (like for a birthday party) can split into multiple teams and work in different rooms trying to beat the other teams.

Here a few escape rooms in the Zürich area:

26. Bowling

Bowling can be a fun diversion when we have a long streak of bad weather. In the Zürich area, we like Fun Bowl Stockmatt in Affoltern am Albis, about a 20 min drive from Zurich. It’s clean, friendly, and festively lit, a comfortable place for families. They have bumpers to help small kids can enjoy the fun.

Open: every day 14:00 – 24:00

27. Laser Tag

We usually save Laser Tag for birthday parties. But it’s also fun for small groups for an impromptu activity any day of the week.

In Zürich city, we like Laser Arena, which is located in the Enge neighborhood near Sihlcity. If you go with a big group, you can request that you are on the same team or split so you compete against each other.

On Wednesday afternoon, they have a special for kids – 3 games for CHF 25.

Spend rainy days with kids in Zurich on the go-kart track.

29. Hot chocolate at Sprüngli café

It’s always a treat on a cold day to sit in a beautiful café and enjoy Swiss hot chocolate and pastries in a cozy setting. Zürich has many fun cafes but if you want an old world feel, the Sprüngli café is a good choice.

We suggest their grand cru hot chocolate with chocolate foam. They have lots of beautiful pastries, but we typically get their chocolate truffle brioche, which chocolate baked inside. For groups larger than four or weekend brunch, best to reserve a table a few days in advance.

Website: spruengli.ch

Location: Paradeplatz, Bahnhofstrasse 21, 8001 Zürich

Cost: hot chocolate starting at CHF 7.90

Zürich has many theater companies that offers family-friendly events, from plays to musical theater to classical music and opera. Most performances are in Swiss-German but here are three theater companies that perform in English:

several actors in victorian costume for the play: A Christmas Carol
Simply Theatre‘s production of “A Christmas Carol”

See our full list of theater & music companies in Zürich.

39. Movies in English

Movies are perfect for a rainy day, but a little tricky in Switzerland if you don’t speak German. Happily Zurich has several theaters, include Arena Sihlcity and Kitag Corso and Abaton, that consistently show movies in English.

Most movies will show in the original language on one screen for the first two weeks, maybe longer if the movie is very popular. Kids movies may only show the first weekend in the original language, so don’t delay.

Look for the E/d/f symbol next to the movie title, the capital letter E indicating the spoken language will be English. The large letter is the spoken language and the small letters indicate subtitle languages.

40. Music concerts

If you enjoy classical music, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich offers many performances in their beautiful concert hall. One Sunday a month, they have a family concert matinee, with a fun program geared towards children, often with storytelling.

  1. Hi
I’m thinking of a long stopover in Zurich in January with a 9 year old boy.
    Any recommendations?
We arrive at around noon and leave at about 10:30pm.
    TIA

    1. I would visit Sprüngli for some chocolates, maybe the Landesmuseum near the train station (has lots of interactive displays). You might do the family Fox Trail, which is a fun way to see the city with children: https://events.foxtrail.ch/en/familytrail-zuerich If you don’t need to “see Zurich,” just have fun with the child, Technorama in Winterthur is really fun.

It will be dark early, about 17:00, and most museums close at the same time. So you’ll need something to do inside after that. Maybe go for fondue in the evening if the child would like that: https://www.zuerich.com/en/visit/fondue-restaurants

      I’ll keep thinking…

  2. Nice post. I was checking continuously this blog and I am inspired! Extremely useful info specifically the final section 🙂 I handle such information much. I used to be seeking this certain info for a long time. Thank you and good luck.

  3. Thanks so much for this guide, I use it a lot.

Unfortunately I see that the links to the interactive museums has disappeared. Could you post it again?.

    Thanks

    1. Sorry about that and thanks so much for letting me know! A few things broke when I renamed the website. So happy to have your help. I’ll get that fixed right away.

  4. So many wonderful ideas! Love the library, simple and nice.
We usually find stuff to do at home like baking or crafting.
