We love the unique character of the Dolomites (the Italian alps), so spiky and rocky, such a different feel from the Swiss alps. Here are our favorite family hikes in this area from our recent summer holiday.
This short hike packs a punch on the spectacular views, a good choice for families that need an easy option in this area. Although the rocks on this trail can make for tricky footing, my kids loved jumping around on them, breaking up the monotony of just walking. Moderate 3.2 km.
Easy valley walk with beautiful cliffs on all sides, a nice break from more difficult hikes in the Dolomites. Popular place for family picnics. Easy 4 km each way or as short as you like.
Ride up a crazy coffin-like cable car to the center of these spiky peaks, then hike around in a rocky landscape with sweeping views across the Val Gardena and Seiser Alm regions of the Dolomites. Moderate 8.5 km.
Fantastic family-friendly 6.5 km panorama hike that happily traverses the mountain instead of hiking up and down it. We loved the wide open views overlooking Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites, and its impressive glaciers.
These iconic peaks are *the* symbol of the Dolomites, known as Tre Cime di Laveredo or Drei-Zinnen. We did the 9.5 km loop around the peaks, absolutely recommended despite the inevitable summer crowds. It’s rated “easy” and is suitable for families, but it might be a bit tougher than you expect.
How we made our tour of Tuscany hill towns fun for our kids including lots of parks, lots of gelato and a trip to the sea.
