What to expect at Swiss indoor swimming pools

Many towns have a public indoor swimming pool, aka Hallenbad. Most have a 25 m lap pool and a shallow 1m deep “non-swimmers” pool. Some have extras like a baby splash pool, waterslide, diving boards, and/or blow-up bouncy things to jump on in the pool. Some even have some thermal bath elements, like bubble jets and saunas.

All indoor pools have changing rooms with lockers, some with mixed gender family rooms. Usually the lockers can be locked by inserting a 2 or 5 franc coin, which is returned when you open the locker.

Many pools close for a week or two during winter for deep cleaning or renovations, sometimes over Christmas break. Check websites for details.

The website www.badi-info.ch has the full list of all swimming pools in Switzerland, listing the amenities.

1. Zürich Altstetten Hallenbad

Our favorite indoor pool in Zurich is Altstetten. It has an indoor water slide, diving boards, and heated indoor/outdoor wellness pool where kids are welcome during certain hours. They also have “Blasiotage,” when they put big floating bouncy platforms in the pool, from 14:00 to 17:00 on Wed, Sat, and Sun afternoons and all afternoons during Zurich school holidays. There is limited metered parking at the pool, but more just a couple blocks away at “Parkhaus Krone” on Feldblumestr.

2. Schwimmbad Fohrbach Zollikon

Ask anyone with kids in Zurich where they like to swim, and they’ll answer this pool. It has two indoor waterslides, two non-swimmer pools, kiddie splash pool with mini slide and river, a lap pool, and outdoor heated pool with massage jets (adults only). There’s ampel metered parking nearby, but it can be very crowded on weekends after 10am.  The outdoor pool is also fun in summer. Adults 9CHF, Kids 5CHF, under 6 free.

3. Adliswil

We like this pool for little kids that just need a little splash pool. It’s not amazing, but it gets the job done. There is a fun kiddie splash pool with a mini slide. The non-swimmer pool has a slightly bigger slide, which is nice for slightly older kids that are learning to swim. They give lots of swim lessons, so often the non-swimmer pool is off limits to regular visitors.

  • Location: Talstrasse 10 Adliswil ZH

4. Schwimmendbad Lättich Baar

In addition to the regular stuff, the indoor pool has a lazy river, diving area, and an extra splashy kiddie pool. We loved this pool when our kids were little. Metered parking can get full on a busy weekend.

5. Uster

The Uster indoor pool is one of the largest in Switzerland. They have an Olympic-sized lap pool, a 25 m lap pool and 25 m shallow depth pool for play. They have a 55m long water slide and a splash pool for small children. They also have a wellness area for adults with a saunas, steam bath, cold-water plunge pool, and relaxation rooms.

Although all indoor swimming pools are heated, they aren’t super warm and skinny kids can get cold pretty fast. But thermal baths are always toasty warm and have lots of great features that kids can enjoy too, like bubble beds, lazy rivers, hot and cold pools, and scented steam rooms. 1. Note the pool in Altstetten, which before had that wonderful bouncing floating castle in the pool, now doesn't have this – rather a much simpler inflatable tube platform is lowered on the schedule on their website. Still fun, especially for younger kids/babies, but mine where disappointed as I had shown them the picture and they remembered it from last time 🙂
