3. Türlersee

Zürich locals love the Türlersee because it’s so close, yet feels so far away out in the countryside. We’ve come for many picnics, done the Geocache trail around the lake, attempted to fish here, and even ice skated on it when it froze over a few years ago. Strangely, we’ve never swam here but friends tell me that its lovely. There’s a playground and cafe at the adjacent campground.

12. Gelmersee

While the lake is spectacular, this place is more famous for its ridiculously steep open-air funicular that brings you up to this gorgeous view. The 4 km loop around the lake is a little dangerous with some steep cliff drop-offs but not super difficult. We usually go in late August to pick wild blueberries and dare each other to jump in the icy water if it’s hot enough.

13. Riffelsee in Zermatt

As famous and beautiful as this lake is, I’m surprised that not everyone who travels up the Gornergrat railway spends the extra 5 minutes walking down to the Riffelsee. Even in the late July, when Zermatt and all the mountain transport are packed with tourists, this little lake is relatively quiet, even quieter if you walk around it and down the beautiful trail to Riffelalp. You can take loads of pictures while your kids look for tadpoles. Read more…

  1. Tanya,
My son and I took the Gelmerbahn to the Gelmersee in late July, based on what I read from you. Best part of our 5 day trip thru the Alps. The twisty roads were fun, but this was the icing on the cake. I had reserved the 1st ride of the day, but had to change it. That was an easy process. I had scheduled 3 hours between going up and coming down. My son is 28 and i am 62. 3 hours was more then enough time for us to make it around the lake with a couple stops along the way to skip stones, have a snack, and just take in the beauty, with time to spare at the end. We were able to get an earlier ride going back down. I used walking sticks, which were a big help. I walk a lot, but not on terrain like this, or at this altitude, so I highly recommend them. Thank you so much for your information. It made the decision to stop there so easy.

    1. So glad you enjoyed your visit and thanks for the fun report of your day.
