Where to stay in Lucerne

During October, it’s best to stay in Lucerne city, as restaurants and services in smaller villages can be closed for a seasonal break.

Best Lucerne Hikes for October

1. Ibergeregg to Rotenflue loop

This hike starts at the Ibergeregg pass, accessible by car or bus. Since it doesn’t rely on a cable car, you can do this hike anytime conditions allow.

The trail has panorama views across the Muotathal valley and down to Lake Lucerne.

The path is a wide, mostly obstacle-free path, pretty easy walking. There are a couple restaurants along the way for refreshments.

  • Hike: moderate • 2h30 • 6.8 km • 230m up & down
  • Open: year round
  • Location: Ibergeregg pass
  • Cost: parking fees or bus to reach the pass
  • Conditions: webcam • weather

See trail map for Ibergeregg-Rotenflue panorama loop

2. Schächental: Biel to Eggberge

In fall, we’re always hiking on the Schächental Höhenweg, a long trail traversing a mountain just south of Lake Lucerne. The cable cars here run year round and it’s sun-facing, so a good choice for the shoulder season.

We particularly like the section from Biel to Eggberge. Along the way, you’ll visits the small Fleschsee alpine lake, take a break at the Alpstubi Selez mountain cafe, and admire the region from the Hüenderegg peak.

The path is mostly easy walking, often on a service road. You’ll spend the first 2/3 of the hike in the sun, so the final descent in the shady forest can feel surprisingly chilly. Bundle up!

This area is popular with locals, so you’ll hear lots of Swiss German.

  • Trail: moderate • 3h • 9.2 km • 260m up, 430m down
  • Open: cable cars run year round, trail often possible through mid November, restaurants often close end of October
  • Location: start at Brügg-Biel cable car, end at Eggberge cable car
  • Cost: cable car fees and bus to connect ends of trail
  • Conditions: schächentaler-höhenweg.ch • live status • webcam

3. Engelberg Fürenalp: “Little Patagonia” Panorama Trail

This trail wanders the alps at the far end of the Engelberg valley. In mid October, this area gets some nice fall colors in the forests along the second half of the trail.

First ride a tiny cable car up the mountain, where you’ll find a restaurant and playground with a view. Even if you can’t do the full hike, the restaurant is a nice place to enjoy the view with a delicious meal. Perhaps a short wander to the Mirror lake above the restaurant.

The panorama trail traverse the mountain to the Stauber falls, then down along the river into the forest. The last section doesn’t get much sun in fall, so can turn very cold even if it was warm earlier in the hike.

4. Klewenalp – Stockhütte

Klewenalp-Stockhütte is a small mountain resort near Lucerne. The hike started higher up in the mountains, with yellow hillsides and the occasional red tree popping out of the evergreens.

Klewenalp trail pics taken on 30 Sept.

Then we dipped into the forest, with lots of yellow and orange trees in the mix. After the hike, we rode scooters down the whole mountain, where the colors were fast and thick, the whole mountain side seemingly aflame.

This is a good one for kids since there are playgrounds on both ends of the hike, plus the fun mountain scooter ride.

  • Trail: Easy • 2 h • 5.5 k • 70m up, 360m down
  • Open: cable cars open daily thru 1 Nov 2026, then November weekends if good weather
  • Location: Beckenried-Klewenalp cable car: Kirchweg, 6375 Beckenried
  • Cost: one way on cable car and bus fare

5. Rigi Panorama

Since Mt Rigi is open year round, you can often hike here when other mountains are closed. We’ve hiked here as late as mid November, when we had a particularly sunny, warm fall.

6. Niederbauen Wildlife Observation Trail

Niederbauen is a mountain south of Lucerne with fantastic views of Lake Lucerne. This trail leads through meadows and forests around an arena of tall cliff walls and impressive peaks.

Niederbauen trail on 4 October

In October, many of the trees turn bright yellow, orange and red, a beautiful contrast to the bright blue lake in the distance.

The theme of this trail is “wildlife observation,” with several info boards along the way about the wildlife here. They say if you go early in the morning and have some patience, you may see ibex, grouse and other animals roaming this area.

The trail ends at Stockhütte, where you can either ride the cable car or a “bikeboard” scooter down the mountain, a fun way to end the day.

7. Stoos Ridge Trail & Fronalpstock Viewpoint

Fall is a much quieter time to visit Stoos, home to the popular ridge trail and gorgeous cliff viewpoint over Lake Lucerne. But to avoid disappointment, it’s important to check the operating times and trail status before heading out.

Stoos Ridge Trail: The trail starts at the Klingenstock chair lift and ends at the Fronalpstock chair lift. If you want to hike this trail when the Klingenstock lift is not running (our pics below are from late October), you’ll need to hike up from the Stoos village, about 2h (see trail map). But do not attempt this trail if there is snow or ice. Check status.

Stoos viewpoint. The main viewpoint at Stoos is accessed by the Fronalpstock chair lift, which is open daily thru late November.

8. Schönbüel

Schönbüel is a mountain area about halfway between Lucerne and Interlaken, known as one of the sunniest spots in Switzerland. Start with the Lungern-Turren cable car, with a fantastic view of Lake Lungern on the way up.

Then hike up thru golden meadows to the Tüfengrat ridge, where you’ll get a sweeping view across Lake Brienz to the Jungfrau Region and beyond. Continue up the Schönbüel guesthouse for a tasty lunch with a view. Then back to your starting point.

  • Trail: moderate • 3h • 8.2km loop • 560m up & down
  • Open: daily thru 1 Nov 2026, then weekends only thru 17 Dec 2026. Check status.
  • Cost: cable car round trip
  • Location: Lungern-Turren cable car – Wichelstrasse, 6078 Lungern
  • Conditions: webcam • weather

See trail map.

9. Melchsee-Frutt

The golden meadows at Melchsee Frutt is one of my favorite views in autumn. We usually hike up to the Bonistock ridge then descend to the lakes and wander back through the meadows.

For an easier day, do the easy lake trail, which is basically flat. You can do a longer loop or use a Frutt-Zug shuttle to make the trail shorter, 1-2h.

The glacier viewpoint at Mt Titlis is accessible year round. At the top, you can walk on the glacier snow, cross a suspension bridge over the glacier, and walk thru an ice tunnel in the glacier.
