Location

Sattel Hochstuckli is a small mountain resort south of Zürich and east of Lucerne. See on Google Maps. The ski resort is accessed by a gondola from the valley.

Ski resort overview

Here is the winter map for the Sattel Hochstückli resort.

To reach the resort, you have to ride a gondola. The learning area and practice hill are directly below the mountain gondola station.  This means non-skiing parents bringing a child to the learning area must also pay to ride the gondola.

The winter hikes and sled runs start at the top of the gondola.

Sattel Hochstuckli used to have steep drag lifts on the higher slopes but these have been discontinued. Now you can snowshoe or ski tour in this area.

Getting Here

To reach the ski area and other attractions, you first take a gondola up from the valley.

By car: Drive to Sattel and follow signs to the Sattel Hochstückli gondola. There is a large parking lot but it can fill up quickly on the weekends. The parking is metered, so make sure to pay for your ticket before returning to your car.

By transit: The Sattel, Gondelbahn bus stop is directly adjacent to the gondola station. Find your exact connection on SBB.ch. In some cases, your best connection may be to the Sattel train station, then a 10 min walk to the gondola station.

Ticket prices

In 2023, a ski/sled day pass costs CHF 35/adult, CHF 28/youth (16-20) and seniors, CHF 19/children aged 6-16.

Children under 6 ride the gondola for free. But to use the Rondos beginner ski area with magic carpet, children aged 3-6 need a day pass that costs CHF 10.

If you only need a return ticket on the gondola (non-skiing parent or winter hiker), this costs CHF 28/adult, CHF 23/adults with SBB Half-fare, and CHF 14/children aged 6-16 (2023).

If you want to do the sled run one time (e.g. after the winter hike), instead buy a single ticket for the gondola and then sled back down. You can rent sleds at the top gondola station for CHF 10, cash only.

You can buy your gondola tickets with cash or card at the valley station. See current prices on Sattel website.

Season Passes

Sattel Hochstuckli offers a winter season pass, which includes night sledding and Saturday night use of th gondola. See current prices.

There are also a few regional passes that include Sattel Hochstuckli. The Swiss Knife Valley pass includes 7 small ski areas near Sattel, including Mythen Region and Rigi.

The Schneepass Zentralschweiz pass covers 15 ski areas including Sattel Hochstuckli, Stoos, Andermatt, Engelberg, Melchsee-Frutt, Hasliberg, etc. You can buy this pass for winter only or for both summer & winter seasons. It also gives you discounts on equipment purchases and rentals in participating sports stores. Families get an additional discount on children passes when purchasing all together.

The Meilenweiss pass including ski areas in 4 countries, including Sattel Hochstuckli, Flumserberg, Pizol, Wildhaus, Braunwald, Stoos, and many others. Most of these passes are offered at a discount in the pre-season. So check winter pass prices in Oct and year passes in April.

Sledding

The 3.5 km sled run starts where the gondola drops you off and continues all the way back down to the base on the gondola. My husband and my son did the sled run and reported that it was fast and scary but very fun. You can rent sleds at the top for CHF 10 in cash.

Check conditions before you go because there isn’t always enough snow for the sled run, even if there is snow in the ski area at the higher elevation. See our complete review of the Sattel sledding.

Skiing

Sattel has a learning area called “Rondo’s Learning and Fun Land.” It has a magic carpet, beginner’s ski lift, and easy slope suitable for absolute beginners. For children aged 3-6, a day pass for this area costs CHF 10. Otherwise, you need a ski day pass to use this area.

Winter Hiking

Sattel offers two groomed winter walks accessible from the top of the cable car. We’ve done the Engelstock panorama trail, 5.75 km loop, about 1hr45 walking time, 140m up & down. It’s pretty easy walking, with some uphill in the middle. See our full post about the Sattel Engelstock Winter Hike.

At the end of the trail, you cross the suspension bridge. There is a second shorter loop walk that also crosses this bridge.
