The Sattel-Hochstuckli ski resort near Zürich has a 3.5 km sled run, a popular choice for non-skiers. The sledding path starts at the top of a gondola and descends 400m of elevation on a prepared route to the valley.

Compared to other sled runs, this one is steeper and more extreme, better for older children and experienced sledders. If you need variety in your day, you can start with the Engelstock winter hike before sledding.

Note: Because of this ski resort’s the low elevation, this sled run is usually not open the whole season, so check the status before heading out.

Photos of sled run

Here is the start of the sled run following the purple signs with the sled icon. It starts through the village.

The sled run follows a well-defined trail that cuts back and forth across the mountain.

Most sledders go straight down, but you can use your feet to squiggle back and forth to control your speed a bit.

This pic is from the gondola, showing the sled run on the left and ski piste on the right.

This pic shows the same section from above but a bit lower down, where you can see the hills gets quite steep.

My husband said that you pick up a lot of speed on those straightaways. But as shown below, there is a flat section after each steep hill, which slows you down.

On the second half of the hill, there are some switchbacks through the forest.

Ending the sled run in the fog.

Successfully made it down the mountain without injury!
