Honold Chocolate Tram in Zurich

In November, Honold Confiserie hosts the “Schoggi- Tram,” a chocolate-themed tram ride around Zürich city. As you ride, you drink hot chocolate, eat cake, and taste a variety of chocolate pralines.

We have enjoyed this fun fall tradition many years. But last year, they dramatically raised the prices from CHF 25 to CHF 45 per adult, the website promising “something truly special” this year. I can’t in good conscience really recommend it anymore.

But if you are still interested, read below to learn everything you need to know about the Honold Schoggi-Tram.

When to go

In 2025, the Honold Schoggi-Tram runs from October 31 to November 17. You book tickets for a specific time slot, from about 13:00 – 19:00. The ride is about 30 mins.

Best to arrive about 15 mins before your time slot. The tram will not wait for you.

I suggest riding during daylight hours so you can see the city. I thought it would be fun to ride at night to see the city lit up. But I found that at night, we couldn’t see much outside the windows since the Christmas lights are up yet when the Schoggi-Tram is running.

How to book the Honold Chocolate Tram

In 2025, tickets cost CHF 45/adult, CHF 35/child aged 3-12, under age 2 free.

There are 25 tickets available for each time slot and they sell out quickly. Best to book as soon as they go on sale in mid October. Book tickets on the Honold website.

If you don’t get tix or feel it is too expensive, you can stop by the Honold shop for a few bites.

What to expect on the chocolate tram

You board the tram at the Bellevue tram stop. Arrive at least 5 mins before. We arrived 15 mins before and it was a little crazy.

During the short ride, you get a hot chocolate and their “Pain de Gênes” almond cake (strangely not chocolate).

Then a server walks around with a tray of chocolate pralines for you to try. You can request as many as you like. They’ll come around again for seconds.

We were absolutely stuffed by the time we left the tram and couldn’t eat more chocolate even though we wanted to.

Seating

The tram is small and seating very tight. Most tables are for just 2 people. My family of four squeezed into the back bench shown here.

If you book a group, you may not get to all sit together. In 2023, we booked three tickets together and my two friends got a table together and I had to sit at a separate table with two strangers. Not cool Honold!

How to get there

The Schoggi-Tram leaves from Zürich Bellevue, at the special tram stop near the Dunkin’ Donuts. See on Google Maps. Many Zürich trams go to Bellevue, including 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 15.

By public transport

If you are coming from outside the city, the closest train station is Zürich Stadelhofen. It’s a 3 min walk from the train station to the Bellevue tram stop.

If you arrive at Zürich HB (main station), go the Bahnhofquai/HB tram stop and ride tram 4 or 11 to Bellevue.

By car

The closest parking is the underground parking at Parkhaus Opera – Schillerstrasse 5, 8001 Zürich. It has 300 spots so usually you can get a spot.

If this parking is full, try Hohe Promenade, which is also nearby – Rämistrasse 22A, 8001 Zürich.

Can children go on the Schoggi-Tram? 

Yes, children are welcome on the Schoggi-Tram. However, it’s a tight space inside the tram, with dishes precariously set on small tables, sitting very close to other guests. So I would say this is not suitable for active children that have a hard time sitting still. I would definitely not take kids under 3, much too difficult to manage them on the tram.

I took my boys when they were 10 and 13 years old. They liked it but it, honestly, wasn’t particularly special for them. I think children that like dress-up experiences (like going to the ballet or playing “tea with friends” at home), might enjoy this more than my rough-and-tumble kids.

Although you can take a baby on the tram, I think it would be quite difficult. You cannot take a pram or baby seat on the tram. So you would have to hold your child on your lap. Plus you have to be very careful not to knock over your hot chocolate mug or plate of sweets.

I think it would be stressful to hold a baby and try to enjoy this experience at the same. Instead, I’d organize with another family and take turns watching the babies while the other family enjoys the tram.

Suggested itinerary

The tram is short, only about 30 mins. If you have come into the city just for this, you’ll probably want to add on other activities. 

• To continue the chocolate theme, you can do a chocolate walking tour of Zürich and buy some treats to take home.
• If you come on a Wednesday, the regular collection at the Zürich Kunsthaus (art museum) is free.
• The Grossmunster cathedral is a short walk from Bellevue. For a small fee, you can climb tower.
• Or simply stroll around the city on one of my Zürich city walks.

Where to eat nearby

If you want to eat a savory meal before or after your chocolate experience, these nearby restaurants are both tasty and relatively affordable:

• Napule pizza – delicious Napoli style pizza. Takeaway only so I suggest eating on the plaza in front of the Opera house or along the lake. 
• Sternen grill – best bratwurst in the city and good roast chicken (but messy!)
• Vapiano – good and affordable pizza & pasta indoors
• tibits Bistro – delicious vegetarian buffet and cozy interior
• Burgermeister – one of our fave burger joints in the city
