My Neverending Switzerland Hike To-Do List

My personal hiking to-do list so you can see a little behind the scenes of my planning process. What should I add to my list?

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy. Note that prices and opening times may change without notice.

Here are all the hikes on my To-Do list. I’ll keep adding to it until the end of time. Most of these hikes are long, tough hikes because I’ve already done all the easy ones. We’ll see if I can get my boys to come on these with me. Switzerland – watch out, here we come!

Eastern Switzerland

Legler Hut

This hut books out so fast, that I might not ever get to stay there. The hike starts in Mettmenalp, goes up to the hut, then hikes down the other side to Elm where we can ride a mountain scooter down the last bit. This has been on my list for many years.

8 h • 15 km • 980 m up 1130 m down • See trail mapLegler Hut

Wildspitz

This is at the top of my list for a weekday hike with friends. It feels like all my hiking friends have done it already, so I really need to bag this one. But where will I find the time??? See trail info.

St martins loch – Sardona Welterbe Weg

There’s a famous hole in the mountain, where the sun shines through twice a year on the church in the Elm village. You can climb up and over that mountain close to that hole. The official Sardona Welterbe Weg trail is 21 km, so I’m going to shorten it significantly by taking gondolas on both ends. I’ve already done the second half of this trail when we did the Films Waterway trail that led to Segnesboden, shown below. I might stay in the hut near the hole, if they have space for me. Can’t wait!!! See trail info. • See trail map

Braunwald to Glattalpsee

The last time we hiked in Braunwald, we saw signs pointing across a long remote mountain landscape to another valley far away. So now I’m desperate to do that.

4 h • 12.37 hm 673 m up 712 m down • See trail map

Karstspur Silberen

I learned about this trail when we did the neighboring Urwaldweg Bödmeren. For both of these trail, you have to drive up an insane one lane road, that completely fried my nerves. There’s no bus up there, so you have to drive. I don’t know if I can do it. But I really want to do this hike!

5h30 • 14 km • 1100m up/down • See trail info

Speer

I’ve hiked to Speer once before, but I took the slightly scary scramble route without a chair lift. So next time I want to do the official trail that starts in Amden, starting with a chair lift to skip the first bit of the climb.

6h • 15.5 km • 620 m up 990 down • See trail mapMore info

Flumserberg 7 Peak Tour

I’ve done two short versions of this, a 4 Peak tour, so now it’s time do hike the full thing.

5h35 • 15 km • 880 m up 1500 m down • See trail info

Schnebelhorn

This is the highest point in Zürich canton, so I feel like I have to mark it off the list. Most people do a loop from Steg. But I’m curious about the multi-day route that starts at Atzmännig.

5 h • 16.5 km • 733 m up/down • See trail info

Hüttenchopf Weg

Just another hike near Zürich that seems like I should have done it already. But maybe I’ll save it for late fall when it starts snowing at high elevations again.

4 h • 12 km • 660 m up 740 m down • See trail info

Roslenalp Zwinglipass

When I hiked to Saxer Lücke, I saw some people hiked up the valley to the right of those peaks and now I want to do that too. There’s a hut up there, so I would probably plan this for a two day adventure. I need to research this area a lot more to see if that trail is possible for a low risk hiker like me.

See trail info

Limmerensee

I keep seeing Insta photos of people doing yoga poses on a cliff overlooking this lake, so obviously I have to go and do it too. But the hike is very strange. Either you scramble up a scary cliff with chains or you walk through a dark tunnel for 3 km. Neither seem that appealing. But all sorts of non-serious hikers seem to get to this photo point. So either they are stupid or it’s not as bad as I think. Not sure when I’ll do this one. See trail map.

Wägitalersee

Not sure what hike to do here. I’ve just never been to this lake so clearly I need to visit it.

This loop hike looks interesting.

Graubünden

Alp Mora

These cool natural pools have been on my list for a long time. But the hike is brutal and friends have told me definitely not to do it on a hot day and maybe not do it at all. But the destination looks so cool, I think I have to go. I just keep looking at the map trying to figure out how to make it shorter and easier. I recently heard the village started running a bus up there once a day and you have to reserve in advance. So now it seems more feasible.

We also heard that you can purchase a permit from the village to drive on the private road to get you much closer to the pools. But you have to have a 4×4 vehicle with clearance, like a jeep, because the road is so bad. Not sure that’s in the cards for us.

Poschiavo Val da Camp

We wanted to do this on our last trip to the Engadin. But it’s so long that I thought I would ruin my children’s good will if I made them do it. But I just read that there is a post bus that gets you much closer to the lake, so the hike is only a 5 km loop. That would be amazing.

Also it’s really far away from everything, 1hr40 by train from St Moritz! We looked at staying in that area, but a) there aren’t many options and they were all booked and b) there weren’t a lot of other hikes I wanted to do there. So it languishes on the to do list.

Piz Scalottas Lenzerheide

My hiking partner has a holiday apartment in Lenzerheide so she knows this area really well. We have standing plans to hike from Piz Scalottas to Churwalden. I’ve mapped out a ridge all the way to the Pradischier alpine coaster. But I don’t know the terrain, so it’s maybe not possible. See trail info.

Greine Ebene

I keep seeing pics of this area but it’s not entirely clear how to hike there. It’s a long tough trek, probably would break it into 2-3 days staying at huts. I need to study this much more before we attempt this. See trail info

Central Switzerland

Surenenpass – Via Alpina Stage 7

Ever since I first hiked at Fürenalp, I wanted to follow the trail up the pass and see what I could see. It’s a long one, so we would probably stay overnight at the hut. I would also make it shorter by taking the gondola on both ends of the hike – I’m not a trail purist! When we end the trail in Altdorf, I’m hiking straight to Pouletburg for their delicious chicken in a basket.

See trail info.

Lai da Tuma

We’ve hiked to the Tomasee before but “just” up and back from Oberalppass with my 5 year old. Now it’s time to do the full loop that goes up to the ridge.

4hr30 • 10 km • 900m up/down • See trail info

Höhen Schächental

We did part of this trail from Biel to Eggberge. But most of the people on the bus didn’t get off, but continued to the end of the line to this trail I presume. It’s 22 km, so a little out of my normal range. So I’d probably hike from the start to Biel and ride the cable car down and skip the part I already hiked. Or maybe do it backwards?

See trail info

Arnisee – Leutschachhütte

When we visited Arnisee last summer, we got to chat with the boss of the gondola who obviously knows this area super well. So I asked him about the all the trails and where I should go. I mapped out a bunch of variations, but I think I’ll do the one that visits everything so I don’t miss anything. My loop hikes up to the Leutschach Hut, where we could eat lunch or stay overnight. There are a couple lakes up there. Then I visit the Sunniggratli viewpoint before a long descent. We’ll see if it make sense it in reality.

See my trail map.

Bernese Oberland

Via Alpina – Oeschinensee to Griesalp

Every time I hike at the Oeschinensee, I see the sign leading up to the Blümlisalphütte and I want to follow it. You can hike up to the hut and over the mountain to the other side. See full trail map

Adelboden

In summer 2021, we spent a few days in Adelboden and did some great hikes: Engstligenalp, Adelboden & Choleren Gorge

But now I want to go back and hike from Höchst chair lift, which was closed when we were there. I thought this trail looked nice.

Lenk

I want to hike the Seven Springs trail from Lenk that visits the Simmen Falls. Our Swiss Experience writes about part of this trail. This trail also connects to the Iffigsee Rundweg, so I’ll have to stay overnight so I can do both.

Hike stats: 11km • 4hr30 • 880m up/down • trail map

Tällibahn to Engstlensee

In my effort to ride up every gondola in Switzerland, I need to mark off the unfortunately named Tällibahn. This trail up and over the mountain ridge seems the best option, so let’s do it! The public transportation connections are complicated, so I’m dragging my heels on organizing this one.

See trail info

Gelmersee Hut

Every time we hike around the Gelmersee, I say: “We need to stay overnight at that hut!” I wonder when that will happen. See Gelmerhütte.

Morgenberghorn

A friend told us about this area but was fuzzy on the details. So I’ve been casually researching to find a hike that is more interesting that hiking straight up and straight back down. I’m still looking into it. See trail info.

Ticino

Monte Tamaro to Monte Lema

We’ve hiked up to Monte Tamaro but didn’t have time to hike across the ridge to Lema. You have to start this one early. I’m going to save it for fall when the weather is cooler.

5 h • 12.86 km • 690 m up 660 m down • See trail mapMore info

Sentiero Cristallina

I’ve hiked at Lake Robiei where this trail starts. But now I need to hike from Robiei to the Cristillina hut, then continue to Airolo.

Full trail: Sentiero Cristallina

Ritom long hike

This one is really long so we need to split it up over two days, staying overnight in the Capanna Cadimo

19 km (2 days) • 1010 m up/down • See trail map

Gletscherpfad Basodino at Robiei

We tried to do this trail in mid June but it was covered in snow. So now it’s on the list and hopefully we’ll make it back soon.

3 h • 8.44 km • 590 up/down • See trail mapMore info

Cascata del Salto waterfall

I tried to go to this one but I couldn’t find it. Better luck next time.

Salto in Maggia (Cascata del Salto)

Sentiero Lago di Lugano

On my last trip to Ticino, I met a bunch of locals and they told me I have to do the ridge trail from Monte Bre to the San Lucio pass and onwards to Monte Bar. There are a couple huts along the way, so I’d definitely break it up into 2-3 days.

See trail info

Tibeten carasc bridge

I want to cross the suspension bridge, but friends have told me that the hike is not that pretty. So this is not at the top of list but just something to mark off for completion sake.

3h • 7.19 km • 270m up 600 m down • See trail mapMore info

Valais

Randa bridge

It’s the longest suspension bridge in Europe, so obviously I need to walk over it. But the trail looks miserable, straight up and down in a forest. No thanks. See that trail. I read that you can instead cross this bridge as a part of a 2 day trail on the Europaweg. That sounds a bit more interesting.

Plaine Morte – Crans Montana

My friend vacations here every year and says I absolutely must see the Plaine Morte glacier and I agree. I need to grill her further to understand exactly what I’ll do up there. See Crans Montana website.

Verbier

I did one hike in Verbier back in 2009, carrying my almost 2yr old on my back. So it’s time to go back and see how we’ve both changed. Their website is not particularly helpful, so I’m going to quiz my friend Corina from Packed Again who lives in that region.

Nendaz

When we spent a lovely weekend in Nendaz, one of the main lift was being renovated so we couldn’t do the ridge hike that I wanted to do (shown in the pic below). So now it’s time to go back and set things straight. But it’s a short one, so I’m not sure it’s exactly the right one for us. We’ll have to combine it with something else.

See trail map.

Löschental

I think every single hiker on Instagram went to Löschental last autumn except for me. In fact, I should book an overnight there right now! I’m desperate to see the yellow larch trees in this special valley and maybe this is the year. It quite close to the Aletsch panorama trail, which also had amazing larch trees (see pic below). I’m not sure which trail everyone is doing, but I think it’s the Fafleralp Rundweg. I’m going to quiz Alex of Wanderwegonext to get some tips.

Vaud & Lake Geneva Region

Gstaad

We spent a few days in Gstaad in summer 2021 and checked a few trails off my list: Wispile to Lauenensee, Videmanette, Saanerslochgrat ridge trail

But now I want to hike the Geltenschuss to the hut, near the waterfall shown in this pic.

Hike stats: 8.2 km • 3hr30 • 735 m up/down • trail map

I also want to hike the Wasserngrat but their chair lift is only a few weeks (and only Thurs-Sun). It was closed when we were there.  I suppose we should also do the Alpness trail.

Rocher de Naye – Via Alpina Stage 19 to Rossiniere

We visited the top but I want to go back and do the Via Alpina that leads to the lake in this picture. But I think I’m not quite fit enough yet for this hike.

7hr30 • 19 km • 820 m up 1900 m down • See trail info

Gastlosen

This area has spiky peaks that look like the Dolomites, very cool! It’s a little far for a day trip from Zürich, so I need to do a long weekend in this area and knock out a few hikes.

4 h • 11 km • 760m up/down • See trail info

  1. This year and last we have spent a lot of time out and about around gstaad. The wispile to lauenen hike is super popular with great views. We also took the Horneggli chair from schonried and then walked to a couple of mountain restaurants at the top. We soent some time by a tiny lake right at the top with a wakeboarding line. Surrounded by cows and dung heaps it had been set up by an enterprising farmer. The walk or bike ride from lauenen to the lake is nice for a families as no steep and the bike ride from gstaad to turbach was pretty and although uphill relatively easy. There are 2 themed trails for kids and loads of playgrounds and activities. We just love that area as it’s so pretty. It’s definitely worth spending more time there.

    1. Thanks for all the Gstaad tips! I’m excited to go back and try some of these.
