This easy trail at Seebodenalp wanders through lush alpine meadows with stunning views of Lake Lucerne and Mt Pilatus.
A short, flat path leads first to a mountain restaurant with a panoramic terrace—ideal for a relaxed outing. From there, you can either return the same way or continue the loop uphill for a more expansive view of the area.
The trail is fun for kids thanks to the elaborate wooden marble runs along the route and playgrounds at the restaurants. We also appreciate the plentiful picnic areas with tables, fire pits, and beautiful views.
Because of the lower elevation, Seebodenalp is a good choice for spring, with wildflowers starting to bloom in late April. Since it’s so close to Lucerne and Zürich (and practically free if you drive up the mountain), it makes for a quick and convenient nature escape.

Trail overview
This map shows the Seebodenalp panorama loop trail and the important elements of this outing.

This trail starts at Seebodenalp, the top of the cable car and mountain parking. The first part is very easy, leading through alpine meadows on a relatively flat footpath. If you have a stroller or wheelchair, you can travel on the service road, which parallels the footpath.
Along the way, there are lots of benches and a couple picnic areas with tables and fire pits.
In about 30 mins, you reach the Ruodisegg restaurant, which has outdoor seating with a view and small playground. You could also walk another 15 mins higher up the mountain to the adorable Alpwirtschaft Räbalp mountain restaurant, which has an even better view and a playground with a slide and swings.
For a short day, you can walk back the way you came to the parking.
To continue the panorama loop, turn left just after the restaurant and walk around the little pond. Then turn right following the signs for the Panoramaweg, direction Holdenerne. The trails climbs up about 80m, so you get a lovely birds eye view of the trail you walked earlier. Then it loops back down to the parking.
Marble run
For kids, this trail has several elaborate marble runs scattered along the trail – aka “Chugelbahnen”. You can buy a wooden ball from the vending machine in the parking lot – CHF 10. If you ride the cable car, they offer slightly discounted family tickets that include the wooden ball.

The map below shows the panorama loop.

For a shorter, easier hike, just walk to the restaurant and back, about 1 hour round trip, no elevation gain.
For a longer hike, you can keep hiking past the Räbalp restaurant up to the Chänzli viewpoint. It’s a steep climb through the forest, gaining 420m over 2km (see trail map). It took us about 45 mins. The viewpoint was fantastic, but only hike up if you want to add a little fitness to your day.
How to get there
This trail is located on the Rigi mountain near Lucerne. To reach the trail, you can ride the Seeboden cable car or drive up the mountain on a one-lane road.

By public transport
Take a train to Küssnacht am Rigi (not Kusnacht near Zurich!). Then a bus 502/508/529 to Küssnacht am Rigi, Seilbahn. The bus drops you directly at the cable car station.
Travel time from Lucerne 27 mins, Zürich 1 hour.
By car
The cable car is located at Grepperstrasse 43, 6403 Küssnacht am Rigi. There is parking at the cable car station and two overflow parking lots – Räbmatt (5 min walk) and Seeplatz near the ferry dock (10 min walk). Drive time from Lucerne 25 mins, Zürich 45 mins.
If you want to drive up the mountain, drive to Küssnacht am Rigi and drive up Seebodenstrasee, following signs to Seebodenalp – see on map. There is a sign at the beginning of this street that indicates if the parking is full. If it is full, you will need to take the cable car instead.
At the top, there is a large metered parking lot. You get a ticket as you enter. You pay for the parking at a machine when you leave.

Where to eat
There are lots of restaurants in this area. Next to cable car, you’ll find Restaurant Rigi-Seebodenalp. The Grod-Beizli cafe is a 3 mins walk from the parking.
Along the trail, it’s a 30 min walk to Ruodisegg restaurant, which has outdoor seating with a view and small playground. They are open Wed – Sun 10:00 – 19:00. Walk 15 mins further to Alpwirtschaft Räbalp.

Cable car
Here is the Seebodenalp cable car station in Küssnacht am Rigi.

The cable car going up the mountain with Pilatus in view.

Here is the large parking lot at Seebodenalp.

Start trail
Follow signs labeled Panoramarundweg.

This marble run is next to the parking where the trail starts.

The trail is immediately beautiful.

Love this bright green!

We saw a family of ducks in this small pond.

Nice marble run next to a picnic area.

Keep following the Panoramaweg trail signs.

We walked on the trail on the right. You can see the service road on the left, which is obstacle free.

My favorite pic of the trail!

Lots of nice benches along the way.

A few nice picnic areas. These can be quite busy on weekends.

Such lovely views of the lake from here.

Restaurant
It took about 30 mins to reach Ruodisegg Restaurant. There is small play area outside.

We enjoyed coffee and cake here.

Räb Restaurant
From Ruodisegg, it’s 15 min walk uphill to the Räb restaurant, a detour off the panorama loop.

You can review the menu before hiking up.

The restaurant is sitting up on that hill.

The Räb restaurant has lots of outdoor seating.

It has a play area with a slide, trampoline, swings, see-saw, and marble run.

Kids will definitely be happy here.

We had a tasty meal, very Swiss.

View westward from the Räb restaurant.

We hiked higher up the mountain (that’s another story) so I got this nice view down to the restaurant.

Continuing the Panorama loop
The second half of the panorama loop has a mild uphill section. So if you want an easier day, simply walk back on the same path you came on back to the cable car and parking.
To continue the loop, walk behind the Ruodisegg restaurant restaurant and follow the path behind the little pond.

Looking back at Ruodisegg restaurant from the far side of the pond.

After the pond, turn right following the Panoramarungweg signs towards Holderen.

You’ll walk through some more pretty fields.

The turn left into the forest.

Now you hike uphill for a bit. There is one marble run in the forest.

The second half of the loop is quite a bit higher up the hill, so you get a really nice view of the fields and countryside from here.

Nice views from Rigi from this part of the trail.

You traverse some pretty fields.
At this farmhouse, turn left, direction Seebodenalp.

Now you hike downhill until you reach Seebodenalp.

At the edge of the forest, you’ll find this marble run. If you didn’t do the second half of the panorama loop, this marble run is only about 5 mins from the parking.

This is Grod-Beizli, cute cafe near the end of the loop and parking.

Just past the cafe, you’ll find the llama farm. If you’re lucky the llamas will be hanging out by the fence.

All done! One last look at Rigi before we head back down the mountain.

Hope you enjoyed this one! Need more ideas?

Hi! Thanks for the detailed writeup. Do you know if the section of the hike after the Ruodisegg restaurant is stroller friendly?
After Ruodisegg, the path is very lumpy and steep, not suitable for strollers.
