Segnesboden – Hike around high alpine river plain

Loop around beautiful high alpine river plain, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls.

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy. Note that prices and opening times may change without notice.

Segnesboden is a high alpine river plain, a unique landscape and protected nature reserve. Thanks to the new FlemsXpress cable car, you can reach this special place quite easily with a short hike.

We suggest the full loop around the valley, which takes about 1h45. But if you need a shorter day, you can just walk out to the big falls, about 15 mins from the cable car. In any case, I’m sure you’ll love this magical place.

Trail overview

This trail is a loop starting at the Segnes cable car station. We prefer hiking counterclockwise, starting with the big waterfall and finishing by hiking up a few switchbacks, which we find a bit easier than downhill.

Trail map

The map below shows the loop trail.

Longer hike

Do the loop clockwise, then continue on the Trutg di Flems (Flims Waterway) trail down to Flims. This full trail is 14.5 km and takes about 5-6 hours. See trail info.

Cheaper option

The cable car from Flims to Segnes is quite expensive. A much cheaper option is to ride mountain Bus 125 from Laax to Alp Nagans and start the hike there.

In this case, the trail is a bit longer and more uphill. 7.9 km • 2h30 • 386m up & down. See trail map on SchweizMobil.

The bus costs CHF 16 one way. Discounts 50% with Flims Laax guest card, Swiss Half Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass and GA.

How to get there

This trail is located in Flims, a mountain resort in southeastern Switzerland.

To reach the trail, you can ride the “Flems Express” gondola from Flims to Segnes.

By car:

Drive to Flims. Park in the Stenna Parking garage adjacent to the cable car station – Via Nova, 7017 Flims

By public transport:

Take a train to Chur. Then a bus to Flims Dorf, Bergbahnen. The cable car is a short walk from the bus stop.

Make sure to take the express bus, not the regional bus, which has the same bus number and leaves at the same time but takes about 20 mins longer.

Planning your day

Tickets

If you do the loop hike from Segnes, you’ll need a return ticket from Flims to Segens.

You can buy tickets online in advance to save time when you arrive. But tickets don’t sell out. See current prices.

Cheaper option: mountain bus

Instead of riding the FlemsXpress, you can ride a mountain bus from Laax to Alp Nagans. From there, you hike about 30 mins up to Segnes to start the hike.

In 2026, a round trip ticket for the mountain bus costs CHF 32 full fare. Discounted 50% with the Flims Laax guest card, Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, and GA.

Opening Times

The FlemsXpress gondola runs to Segnes from early June to mid October. It runs 8:30 – 18:00 daily. Check live status of lifts.

This trail is usually free from snow around late June through mid October. Check webcam at Berghaus Nagens.

From Segnes, you’ll walk down through this rocky landscape.

Walk along the river through these rocks.

Then the trail flattens out.

We passed a honey farm, selling jars of delicious honey from these local bees. Bring cash.

The path skirts along the rocks on the side. You’ll see the old path farther in the valley, but it’s blocked off as they don’t want people to walk there anymore.

An overview pic of the valley from a higher trail.

Lots of water running all over this valley. Stay on the path to keep your feet dry and not disturb this area.

2. Big Waterfall

After about 15 min walk from the Segnes station, you’ll reach this waterfall, the tallest in the valley. It’s amazing!!!

Just some pretty pics because I love this place so much.

3. Walking to the far end of the valley

This part has a stone walkway to help protect the moor and keep your feet dry.

Views across the valley.

At the far end of the valley, the forks. Turn left, following signs to Segneshütte, circling around the arena.

The path winds through a boggy meadow with a couple streams flowing through.

At the far end of the valley, you cross the river, jumping from stone to stone. My feet got a little wet.

4. Looping back to cable car

Now walk along the opposite side of the valley.

One of the waterfalls along the way.

Now you start heading up the mountain. I’m looking back on the trail.

Crossing a stream flowing from a pretty waterfall on the way up.

As you hike up the switchbacks, there are a couple short sections where there is a chain handrail on the mountain side. But it’s not too scary or difficult.

Looking back down the valley.

The last view of the valley before heading down to the cable car.

Walk back to the Segnes cable car station and ride back to Flims. Hope you enjoy it!
