If you are looking for a Swiss mountain hut experience, the Cristallina hut in Ticino is a great choice, particularly for casual hikers and families. The hikes to and from the hut are a bit challenging, requiring endurance and steady footing. But they are not dangerous or excessively long, since you can use a cable car at the start and end of the hike.
The views on the hikes and from the hut are spectacular, visiting many lakes, rivers and waterfalls along the way. The hut is friendly and comfortable, with small rooms with bunks instead of large dormitories. Watching sunset and sunrise from a hut is always treat.
We visited this hut with our teenage son and it was a special experience we’ll always remember. Below is all the information you need to plan your trip to visit the Cristallina hut.

Location
The Cristallina hut is located in the Ticino region in southern Switzerland. The hut is in the mountains at 2560m, accessible only by hiking, either from Robiei or Airolo.

Trail overview
Summary of the journey:
- To reach the hut, we took a bus to the Robiei cable car station in Val Bavona.
- At the top of the cable car, we visit Lake Robiei and had lunch at the nearby Capanna Basodino hut.
- Then we followed the Sentiero Cristallina trail to the hut.
- On day 2, we hiked down the other side of the mountain to the Pesciüm-Airolo cable car.
- We rode the cable car down and walked to the Airolo train station and rode home to Zurich.

Hiking maps
Below are hiking maps for the trail from Robiei up to the hut and from the hut down to Airolo. We chose to use cable cars on both ends of the hike to shorten the days. If you want to walk more, you can skip the cable cars on either end.
If you are coming by car, you may prefer to hike up to the hut and back the same way, so you can end at your car. In this case, I would prefer the Robiei hike from day 1.
Day 1: Robiei to Cristallina Hut
The trail map below starts at the Robiei cable car and visits the first big lake near the cable car station. Then it joins the paved service road leading to the higher reservoirs. After about 1 hour, the trail branches off to a rocky dirt path, going quite steep up the mountain. Then you cross over a pass and traverse a mountain above another mountain lake and a final climb to the hut.

Day 2: Cristallina hut to Pesciüm-Airolo cable car
This trail starts in a very rocky landscape heading down to the Benedritto valley. The rocks give over to grassy alpine meadows as you follow a river down the valley. After about 2 hours, you turn onto a dirt service road that traverses the mountain. Occassionally you branch onto narrow foot paths through forests.
The trail leads to the Pesciüm-Airolo cable car, where there is a restaurant. We chose to ride down the mountain from here. If you prefer to walk, you can keep following the Sentiero Cristallina trail another 90 mins down the mountain.

Sample schedule
The following sample schedule is based on 2023 timetables. This schedule assumes a leisurely pace with lots of breaks and lunches at the restaurants. You can do this much quicker if you walk fast and eat a picnic lunch on the trail.
Since you need to start quite early on Day 1, we suggest staying overnight in the area the night before. You could stay in Locarno or somewhere in Valle Maggia or Val Bavona. We stayed at Eco Hotel Cristallina, about an hour bus ride from the Robiei cable car.
Day 1
On day 1, the hike from Robiei to the hut takes 3 hours. It’s best to arrive at the hut before 17:00 so you have time to settle in before dinner service around 18:30. The bus to Robiei only runs twice in the morning. So check the schedule and plan accordingly.
- 9:20 – Bus from Locarno, arriving Robiei at 10:47
- 11:00 – cable car up to Robiei
- 12:00 – optional lunch at Capanna Basodino near the Robiei cable car
- 13:30 – start hike to hut, plenty of time to stop for breaks along the way
- ~17:00 – arrive at Cristallina hut
- 18:30 – dinner at hut

Day 2
On day 2, the hike down to the Airolo cable car takes about 5 hours. The cable car runs every 30 mins, last ride down at 18:00 in summer, 17:00 in Sept and Oct. The walk to the train station is about 15-20 mins. The trains to Zurich or Locarno/Lugano run about every hour. So check the schedule and coordinate your arrival accordingly.
- 7:00am – breakfast at hut, pack up
- 8:30am – start hike down to Airolo, about 5 hours with breaks
- 13:30 – arrive at Pesciüm cable car station. Optional lunch at La Stüa restaurant.
- 15:00 – cable car down mountain
- 15:20 – walk 20 mins to Airolo train station
- 15:58 – train leaves Airolo headed to Zurich (to Locarno, train leaves on the xx:02)
- 17:55 – arrive at Zurich HB
How to get there
Since this is a one way hike, it’s best to use public transportation for this outing.
By public transport
To start, you need to get to the Robiei cable car (see on map). From Locarno, you can take bus 315 to Bignasco, Posta. Then change to bus 333 and ride to S. Carlo (Bavona), Funivia, the end of the line.
Note that this second bus 333 only runs a few times a day, so check the schedule carefully. For example, if you are starting in Locarno, there are only two morning bus connections, leaving Locarno at 7:20 and 9:20.
The hike ends at the Pesciüm-Airolo cable car (see on map). From the bottom of the cable car, it’s about a 15-20 min walk to the Airolo train station as shown below. There is a public bus from the cable car to the train station, but it does not coordinate well with the train schedule. So usually it’s more time efficient to walk.
By car
If you are coming by car, you may prefer to hike up to the hut and back the same way, so you can end at your car. In this case, I would prefer the Robiei hike from day 1. So simply drive to Robiei and park near the cable car station (see on map). I think the parking is metered, so make sure to pay for multiple days.
If you want to do the one way hike, you could park at the end of the hike in Airolo. You could park in the SBB P+Rail at the Airolo train station. You can park there for CHF 5/day, up to 7 days. There are limited spaces, so it’s possible there wouldn’t be a spot for you.
Alternatively, it might be possible to park at the Airolo-Pesciüm cable car station (see on map). I don’t know if they allow overnight parking, so you would need to get permission of the cable car operators, informing them of your plans to end your hike here in two days time.
Costs
For this outing, you’ll need to pay for the cable cars and overnight in the hut. Below are sample prices from 2023. For one adult, it’s about CHF 128. This does not include lunches or public transport to and from the cable car stations.
Overnight in the hut
Overnight in the hut with dinner and breakfast costs CHF 87/adult, CHF 70/youth 15-21, CHF 52/child 8-14, CHF 30 child under 8. Discount with a SAC Member card. Families get a discount of CHF 5/child under 14.
You cannot book a specific room. Beds are allocated by the hut based on bookings, trying to keep groups together. They have rooms of 4 and 8 bunks, so usually groups would be all in the same room. If you have specific concerns, call the hut to make the reservation.
Robiei cable car
You’ll need a one-way ticket on this cable car, which costs CHF 19/adult, CHF 9/child under 16. Small discount with Ticino Ticket. No discounts for GA, Half-fare or Swiss Travel Pass. You can purchase the ticket at the cable car station with cash or card.
Airolo-Pesciüm cable car
You’ll need a one-way ticket on this cable car, which costs CHF 22/adult, CHF 18/youth 12-17, CHF 12/child 6-11. No discounts for travel cards. If you are riding down, you’ll buy it at the cafe near the bottom station (cash or card). Then show the ticket to the cable car operator.
What to wear & pack
You’ll need to bring your regular hiking supplies, with at least 2 L water for the hike up to the hut. You can fill your water bottles at the hut, no extra charge.
You should bring snacks for the hike. The hut overnight includes dinner and breakfast. You can buy snacks and drinks at the hut, including takeaway sandwiches for the day 2 hike.
We recommend sturdy hiking boots with good tread and hiking sticks. Depending on the forecast, you may need warm layers and a rain jacket. If you plan to be outside the hut after dark or early morning, you may want a light down jacket and warm cap.
The hut provides house shoes (crocs) to wear in the hut. Hiking shoes and sticks stay in the changing room downstairs.
The hut provides a pillow and blanket, but you’ll need to bring a sleeping bag liner or rent one from the hut for CHF 5.
You will need clean clothing for sleeping and hiking the next day. In addition to your personal toiletries, you may want to bring hand/body soap and micro towel, as those are not provided by the hut. A warm shower costs CHF 5 (you must bring soap and towel).
Photo story: Day 1
Here’s the bus stop and parking at Robiei.

Riding up the Robiei cable car.

When you get to the top, you will follow signs to Cap. Cristallina. However, we suggest a couple stops before getting on the trail.

Here’s the Robiei cable car station. The trail starts on the paved road on the right side of the photo. But we prefer to start by walking up the dam and enjoying Lake Robiei a bit first.

Here’s Lake Robiei. There’s a path all around the lake, which is nice if you are just doing a day trip to this area (learn more). To connect to the hut trail, cross the dam and follow the footpath near the river/waterfall, following signs to Cap. Capanna.

Before starting the trail, we also did a short detour to Capanna Basodino for lunch. It’s a 5 min walk below the Robiei station (see on map).

They have salads, cheese and preserved meat, and a few hot dishes including handmade pasta.

Everything was super delicious! I would go back just to eat here.

On the trail to the hut
Now we are on the official trail leading to the hut, which starts on a paved service road for about 1 hour.

It’s not so romantic to be on a road, but the views are nice.

There’s always a river on side of the road.

The road leads to this beautiful lake. You can see the dam for another reservoir above you.

At this sign, you leave the road and follow a rocky footpath straight up the mountain. Follow signs to Cap. Cristallina.

Now we will work hard on the trail for about 45 mins as we gain a lot of elevation in a short distance.

Looking back to that lake, getting smaller every minute as we climb.

Cooling our hands in a little stream.

As we climb, we get nice views of the glacier and another lake near Robiei we didn’t visit.

The climb levels out and becomes a rocky traverse.

The trail leads to a pass, where we now see the Cristallina hut in the distance, beyond the lake.

We descend for a bit into this rocky landscape, then traverse above the lake.

In late June, there were still several snow patches covering the trail. There were lots of footsteps to follow, but it’s slippery. Hiking sticks are very helpful on these parts.

More snow patches as we traverse the mountain.

There was a safety rope on this part but none of the trail was particularly dangerous or exposed.

Looking back at the lake, which had lots of ice chunks floating on one end.

Almost to the hut, getting excited!

Looking back at the last lake on the hike for day 1.

Cristallina Hut
It took us 4 hours to reach the hut, with 2 hours actual walking time. I was quite slow on the hike, really feeling the weight of my overnight bag on the climbs. Seeing the hut was the happiest moment of the day!

Below the hut, there is a shoe/equipment room where you leave your hiking boots and change into house shoes that are provided. You should also leave hiking sticks here. The other pic shows some games in the dining room.

We had a four bunk room with a delightful view. I thought it would be fun to sleep on the top bunk, but it became annoying when I wanted to go up and down many times.

The dining room where we ate dinner and breakfast. Very social environment.

Our meal was a bit nicer than other hut meals we’ve had. They have a vegetarian option, but you have register for that when you book the hut.

They have a big terrace with tables where everyone spent the late afternoon chatting with friends over drinks.

Watching the sunset over the glacier from the hut.

Day 2: Hike down to Airolo
I woke up at 4:30 to watch the sunrise, totally worth it! Then I went back to sleep for a couple hours.

After a heavy sleep, we got up at 7:00 to have breakfast. We were one of the last to leave around 8:30.

Now following signs to Pesciüm, where the next cable car is. This hike is 12 km and took us about 5h20, with 3h45 actual walking time.

Saying goodbye to the hut.

Headed down the other side of the mountain, towards Airolo.

One last look at the hut. Hope to visit again soon.

Passing by a small lake with very clear water. I would have loved a quick dip, but it was too early in the hike for that.

This valley is very grassy, with lots of flowers in late June.

The valley just got prettier the farther we walked, especially when we reached this river.

After about 2 hours, we stopped next to these falls for a snack break. One of the prettiest parts of the trail that day.

Looking back up the trail, glad to be hiking down instead of up today.

The trail leads to this dairy, where you join a service road. Turn right.

Keep following signs to Pesciüm and the green 59 Sentiero Cristallina signs.

The road traverses the mountain, with mild ups and downs.

We passed through a few cow grazing areas with lots of cows, including young calves. You need to be very careful around the mama cows who can aggressively protect their young.

Grateful for some shade as the sun grew stronger at midday.

Pretty views to other mountains maybe we’ll hike next time.

Arriving at Pesciüm where we had lunch.

Riding the cable car down to Airolo. Leaves every 30 minutes.

As we ride down, we can see the Airolo train station on the other side of that small lake. It’s about a 20 min walk from the cable car station.

The end! If you decide to do this trip, please come back and comment to let me know how you liked it.
