If your kids love sleeping in tents and using flashlights as much as mine, it’s time to plan a summer family camping trip in Switzerland. I’m loving the camping series from Kristin at Simple Family Travel, who has been collecting camping tips from a variety of families in Switzerland and posting detailed reviews on her website. Below she’s shared a few favorites from her full series “Let’s Go Camping”.

From Kristin…. We are a Swiss/Australian family who crave the simple things in life and love to travel. Campgrounds not only help us to stretch out our travel budget but also have a unique way of forcing us to get back to basics, where we can really recharge. The series “Let’s Go Camping” created for Simple Family Travel shares not only our own experiences, but from the community as well, because the best recommendations come from families who have actually visited. Here are a few of our favorites:

Camping Eienwäldli, Engelberg – Central Switzerland

This five star campground in the classic Engelberg valley in central Switzerland is a dream location for families, with lots of fun family activities both at the campground itself and in the surrounding mountains. At the campground, our kids jumped on the bouncy pillow till the sun went down and loved pushing the wooden rafts around the pond. We also hiked up to the nearby Brunni Tickle Path via the Globi Treasure hunt trail. Choose from a variety of pitch accommodations underneath the towering mountain peaks and sit back and relax to the sound of the nearby river.

Camping Yverdon Plage, Yverdon les Bains – Western Switzerland

Located on the shores of the Lake Neuchâtel, Camping Yverdon Plage in the French region of Switzerland is a great spot for a summer adventure. Explore the nearby castle of Grandson, visit the local market to pick up local produce for a picnic by the lake and cool down in the local swimming pool, just a short walk away. The campground itself has a kids program in the summer season with the highlight being the slingshot trampoline. Lakeview pitches are available, but if you don’t have your own camping equipment, no worries: rent one of their safari tents.

Camping Morteratsch, Graubünden – Southeast Switzerland

Camping at 1860m above sea level can be done in both winter and summer at Camping Morteratsch which is a great base for a hiking vacation. Visit the glacier of the same name and give the kids a lesson in global warming or head into the Swiss national park and search for wild growing Edelweiss (but don’t pick it, they are protected!). Make sure you pack your warm sleeping bag and a warm jacket as even in summer, the nighttime temperatures drop. The best pitches near the creeks are perfect for tents but van of all types are of course welcome.

Camping Delta, Locarno – Southern Switzerland

Located on the Lago Maggiore between Locarno and Ascona, this campground is for families looking to have the best of both lakeside living and mountains. Cool down in the lake or the Locarno Lido (right next door to the campground) or head up the winding roads up to the valleys of Maggia or Verzasca to swim in their crystal clear but chilly river waters. This is a popular place and the pitch sites are of a smaller size, so best to reserve early for better selection. They also offer a small number of caravans to rent on site.
