This 5km mountain scooter route at Stockhütte has beautiful views of Lake Luzern and the surrounding mountains. Much of the route is through forests, which was particularly beautiful at the end of September, when the leaves where changing.
Here you ride a “Bike Board,” which is a three wheel scooter with hand brakes, much more stable than the two wheel Trotti scooters.
We did this after hiking from Klewenalp to Stockhütte, a very nice stroller-friendly hike, with playgrounds and beautiful picnic areas.

Scooter Route Map
This route follows a paved mountain road from Stockhütte gondola station down to Emmetten, about 5.5 km. It took us about 30 minutes, stopping to take a few photos along the way.
How to get there
This scooter ride starts at the top of the Emmetten-Stockhütte gondola, southeast of Lucerne – Hinterhostattstrasse 4, 6376 Emmetten.
You can simply ride up the gondola and do the scooter run. But we usually ride the scooters after hiking from Klewenalp or Maria Rickenbach. In those cases, refer to the directions in those posts.
By car:
Drive to Emmetten to the metered parking lot next to the gondola at Hinterhostattstrasse 4, 6376 Emmetten. Do not confuse this with the nearby Niederbauen cable car a bit farther up the road.
By public transport:
Take a train to Stans, then bus 311 to Emmetten, Post, which is next to the gondola station.
Planning your day
Cable car
You’ll need a cable car ticket to reach the scooter ride. If you want to go direct without hiking, you ride one-way up the Stockhütte gondola and ride the scooters back down.
But we usually start our day by hiking from nearby Klewenalp (see details for that hike). The 90 min hike ends at Stockhütte where you can pick up the scooters. In this case, you would get a one way ticket up the Klewenalp cable car to start the hike. Then ride the scooter down at Stockhütte.
In 2024, a one-way gondola ticket (on either Klewenalp or Stockhütte) costs CHF 24/adult. GA & Tell Pass ride free, discount for Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card.
Scooter Rental
You rent the scooters at the top of the Stockhütte gondola. In 2024, it costs CHF 18/scooter, which includes the helmet. It does not include transport up Stockhütte cable car.
Recommended age 10+. The important thing is that they can balance on the scooter and work the hand brakes. Last time I was there, children 6 to 10 could ride double with an adult.

The scooter trail follows a paved road about 5 km all the way down the mountain to the bottom of the Stockhütte cable car in the town of Emmetten. There can be cars on this road, so be careful, but traffic is light. We had only two cars pass us during our trip.
Lots of curves and downhill parts, important the kids are strong enough to use the hand brakes.
The road has great views of the lake. In late September, the hills were full of fall colors.
Here we are riding into in the town Emmetten where you return the bike board.
Follow signs to the cable car and walk your bike board up the ramp and park it near the gondolas. The attendants will return the bike boards to the top.
If you parked here, you’re done. If you hiked to Stockhütte from somewhere else, you can catch the bus at Emmetten, Post bus stop to Beckenried or Stans or whatever your final destination is.
