September is a wonderful time to visit Switzerland. It’s less crowded and mountains are fully open for hiking as long as the weather stays nice.

Usually in September, the sky is the limit when it comes to hiking. Most trails and mountain transport are open all month long.
Sometimes an early snow storm may temporarily close some trails and services for a couple days, but it doesn’t stay long.

In fall, you can experience the Switzerland Cheese Festival (aka “Käsefeste” ) in six cities across Switzerland, one location each weekend.
27 Sept 2025 – Thun
Participate in the grape harvest, tour a Swiss wine making facilities, and sample their wines. The event includes lunch with the other participants and winemakers.
Events are held the weekends of 20-21 Sept and 27-28 Sept 2025. You must pre-book for a specific winery. Cost typically CHF 49-59/person, which includes lunch.
About 60 wineries participate each year in the various wine regions: Vaud, Valais, Ticino, Three Lakes (Jura), Easten, and Geneva.
Tours are usually done in the local language and translated in English or other Swiss language depending on the number of participants speaking that language.
