Illgau Chäferliweg • Ladybug theme trail for children

Theme trail for children, following ladybugs painted on the ground through alpine fields and forests. Two playgrounds and picnic areas with grills and lots of mountain views.

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy. Note that prices and opening times may change without notice.

The adorable Chäferliweg theme trail has little ladybugs painted on the ground to follow as you walk through alpine fields filled with wildflowers.

Along the way, there are two fun play areas for kids, nice picnic areas in the shady forest, and big views of spiky mountain peaks across the valley.

It’s a short, easy path, all downhill, but not suitable for strollers. We particularly like that it’s a quiet place, with a few local families but not crowded with tourists.

Trail Overview

To reach this trail, you take a small cable car from the Illgau village to St. Karl. At the top of the cable car, there is a play and picnic area with fire pits, wood and picnic tables.

Then the trail works its way down the mountain back to the village, following the lady bugs.

About halfway down, you’ll find another picnic and play area with fire pits. The path is easy walking, partially on the road, partially on dirt paths in fields and forests, not suitable for strollers.

A witches house and spider tunnel.

On the trail

When you are ready to hike, follow the ladybugs down the mountain. The trail is well marked.

You’ll find these bells in the middle of the trail. You can play one of the songs printed below.

  1. Hi! We did the walk recently and it was very nice and pleasant. The two playgrounds are great, especially at the first you can easily spend more than an hour. The ladybugs markers are very motivating for the kids (5,5,3). We did it as a day trip from Morschach, Swiss Holiday Park. You could easily combine it with another activity on the same day, but we preferred to take it easy and relaxed.
About the paper with the ladybugs: yes, they are distributed at the cable car station.

Btw: you write fantastic hiking guides and recommendations! Very usefull even for us Swiss 🙂 🙂

    1. Thanks for the helpful trip report and kind compliments. So nice! Sounds like you had a great time. Glad to help out the Swiss too 🙂

  2. Hi,
We’re going to be coming from Morschach. Let’s say we do this trail in the morning. Is there something close by that we could also explore? We have a car…
    Many thanks.

    1. Yes, there are lots of other nice places in the area. Stoos is just a few minutes drive from Illgau. If you only have time to ride to the top of Fronalpstock for the views, it’s still worth it. https://swissfamilyfun.com/2015/05/stoos.html/ Glattalp is also close. It’s a nice walk to an alpine lake. https://swissfamilyfun.com/2017/06/glattalp-lake-hike.html/ You could also visit the Swiss Army Knife museum and make your own knife (reservations required). https://swissfamilyfun.com/2015/09/make-your-own-swiss-army-knife.html/

  3. Wonderful! Where did you get the paper with the ladybug names? At the cable car station?
