Höllgrotten Caves

Höllgrotten (Hell-Grotto) is a series of limestone caverns in Baar near Zug. It’s a small operation but bigger and more interesting than you might guess from the outside. You walk through various chambers with lots of interesting stone formations and little “lakes”, dimly lit by colored lights. It’s quite magical and a little spooky. Our 2 year old was a little nervous, so we ended up carrying him most of the way, but he still enjoyed it.

The caverns are cool and damp, a nice break from the summer heat. You’ll get a little wet because it’s dripping all throughout the caves. It’s chilly inside, you’ll want a sweater. There are stairs and narrow passageways, so no strollers. We spent about 30 mins inside, but you could spend longer if you read all the informational signs or used the audio guide.

To make a day of it, you can hike or bike along the nearby river. There are nearby picnic areas, one a few minutes up river from the caves and others downstream. You can also visit the nearby Lättich indoor/outdoor pool.

The Höllgrotten caves are located in Baar, south of Zürich.

Tickets and opening times

The caves are open April through October daily from 9:00 to 17:00.

Entrances fees are CHF 12/adult and CHF 6/child aged 6-16. Under 6 free. Discounts with Tell Pass and Kultur Legi. You can pay with cash, card or Reka-Checks.

How to get there

By car: Drive to Baar, turning south on Lorzendamm. Follow this country road through the forest to a parking lot at the end of the road (47°11’15.0″N 8°33’26.4″E – see on map). Then a short walk to the entrance of the caves.

By transit: From either the Zug or Baar train station, you can take bus 2 to Baar, Tobelbrücke-Höllgrotten. Then a 20 min walk (1.4 km) to the cave entrance, as shown below (see on map).

After buying your tickets, it’s a short walk uphill to the cave entrance. It’s a self’-guided tour and you don’t need to wait for a group.

Explore outside caves

This is the river that flows outside the cave entrance. 

There are a few picnic areas along the river. The one shown here is After about 3.5km, there is a big picnic area, with fire pits and wood.
