Cycling route

Here the bike route we did, with some adjustments to focus on the good bits and remove bits we didn’t like. When we rented the bikes, they gave us a map with a few bike routes and we cobbled them together to make this one long route.

The ride is very flat, mostly on paved roads with bike lanes. We were on e-Bikes, so the ride was pretty easy. On standard bikes, you might find this a little long.

The start and end of this route does not have numbers. Sorry. So follow the map until you reach 56, then follow the numbers below:

56 – 02 – 01 – 57 – 75 – 77 – 52 – 51 (Marken) – 52 – 53 – 54 – 55 –  56 – turn right after bridge on Hoogedijk and all the way back to Volendam

Shorter route: You can optionally take a ferry from Marken to Volendam with your bikes, which costs about € 12/person with your bike.

Getting there

By car: There is a free parking lot in Volendam near the port at Slobbeland 2, Volendam. It’s a short walk to the bike rental.

By public transport: Take a bus to Volendam, Volendam Centrum, about a 30 min journey from Amsterdam. From the bus stop, it’s a 7 min walk to the bike rental.

Bike rental

We rented bikes from Rent & Event, which is located Haven 45, Volendam. They have a wide range of bikes available, as well as motorized scooters.

Best to reserve online beforehand. We reserved through Baja Bikes, but you can also reserve directly on the Rent & Events site.

We rented e-Bikes, which cost €24.50 for the day (in April 2022). The shop is open 9:30 – 18:00. You have to return the bike before the shop closes.

What to see

The highlights of this route are the villages Monnickendam, Zuiderwoude, Marken and Volendam where you start and end. I found Monnickendam the most charming and wish we had had more time to explore it.

If you want some culture and history on your tour, you can stop at these museums along the way: Cheese Factory, Volendams Museum, and Palingsound Museum (eel smoking) .
