We don’t wait for the weather. If we did, we might never go hiking in Switzerland. When the weather looks bad, we carefully study the rain and cloud radar forecasts and try to pick a location where the clouds are breaking up. We often get lucky. Sometimes we don’t.
This September day, we hiked at Glattalp, a beautiful hike with towering mountain peaks surrounding an alpine lake. You should do this hike on a nice summer day. We did not. We were very hopeful the weather would break but it didn’t good look riding up the cable car in the fog.

Most of the hike looked like this, with the clouds occasionally parting to reveal the peaks. Very beautiful in its own way and I’m glad we went instead of sitting at home.

We should have brought a cold lunch, but we brought sausages to grill, hoping the fire would combat the cold weather. Unfortunately it started raining right after we started building the fire. We had to cook the food or we had nothing to eat besides chips. So we sat the boys on a tarp, covered them with my emergency rain poncho and had a picnic in the rain. So ridiculous. But they were troopers and giggled like crazy under that plastic, while my husband and I got wet tending that fire.

Running back home through the rain.

Moral of the story: Bring an umbrella and a cold lunch!
