We love the Solothurn region in northwest Switzerland, which has beautiful lakes, dense forests, and amazing gorges. But we don’t get out there as much as we’d like. So I asked Hana from Our Swiss Experience, who lives near this area, to tell us about her favorite family activities in this region. Originally from the Czech Republic, Hana and her family have lived in Switzerland for almost four years and love to hike, bike and explore with her family as much as we do and blogs about it at Our Swiss Experience.
Grenchenberg hike
Those who like hiking can put their children in its secrets on the Grenchenberg hill. The pleasant 6 km circular trail will delight you with a look at a chain of rocky cliffs. This hike is a good choice for children because it doesn’t require steep climbs or descents. It has beautiful views of the Chasseral peak and Jura mountain range, as well as the Mittelland (aka the Swiss Plateau) and the Aare River curling around the landscape. There’s a nice picnic area where you can cook lunch on a campfire as well as two mountain restaurants with children’s playgrounds and even a jumping pillow.

Weissenstein hike
The Weissenstein peak, part of the Jura Mountains that stretch along the north-western part of Switzerland, towers over the town of Solothurn. After riding a cable car to the top, you can admire the views, walk along the ridge trail or walk down the mountain as we did, a tough walk but a good experience.
Walk through Verena Gorge
On the outskirts of Solothurn, you’ll find Verena Gorge, a magical place. It’s an easy walk through the gorge along a brook over a partially paved forest road. Only half the trail is suitable for strollers, but the trail is not difficult and small children should be fine. In nice weather, kids can wander in the creek

Family bike ride along Emme River
The banks of the Aare river is ideal area for a family bike ride, particularly this section from Kirchberg to Solothurn. The trail is flat and goes through the woods along the river, partly on paved paths, and through villages and towns on paved roads. Children will certainly love the large playground at your destination in Solothurn.

Thanks Hana for this fun list! I can’t wait to try some of these this summer. You can follow Hana on her blog (in English, Czech, and German), Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.
