This beautiful alpine lake feels like a secret, hiding above some rocky cliffs, reached by a narrow one lane road. Once you get there, it’s easy walking on a smooth gravel path around the lake, good for families and pushchairs. The trail optionally dips into the forest, following the Lehrpfad, with illustrated signboards educating you about the flora and fauna in this area.
There are lots of fire pits around the lake for a picnic with a view and plenty of grassy spots for lounging and running around. It’s beautiful in spring and summer, but we’ve also been in November when the lake was covered with ice and pretty as anything.

Location
Obersee is an alpine lake in the Glarnerland region in Eastern Switzerland.
Trail Map
There is a short loop 2.7km loop trail around the lake. There are a few places to build fires as shown on the map below. Walking time was about 1 hour with kids, but we spent a two hours, slowing walking, exploring and eating lunch.
The south side of the lake loop is a smooth gravel/dirt path suitable for strollers. The north side of the trail is on a narrower lumpy dirt trail in the forest, not suitable for strollers. However, it parallels the paved road, so strollers can safely detour onto the lightly used road for this section. There are educational signboards along the trail about the flora and fauna in the area and a few carved wood sculptures.
Longer option: There is an 11km loop that goes up into the mountains surrounding the lake, the Ahorn Rundweg. I’ve done part of this hike and really enjoyed it, though much of it is in the forest without a view of the mountains.
Getting There
This lake is west of Näfels at the entrance of the Glarus valley south of Zurich, only accessible by car. There is no bus service from Näfels to the Obersee.
By car: Drive to Näfels in the Glarus region, then follow signs west to the Oberseetal or Obersee, as shown on the map below. It’s a narrow one lane road that winds up the mountain about 7km to the lake. There are a few roads that split off the main road; continue following signs to Obersee. Park in the dirt lot next to the hotel at the east end of the lake, free to park.
On busy days (usually Sundays and holidays), they may close this road if too many cars are already at the lake. In this case, you can park in Näfels and hike up, about 4 km with 525m of elevation gain. Here is the map.
Trail Details
The trail begins in front of the Berghaus Obersee, shown below, adjacent to the parking. We started to our left, hiking first along the south side of the lake.

There is a fountain with drinking water in the parking area so you can fill your water bottles.

Your first view of the lake, so pretty with the mountain reflections.

You can start on the Lehrpfad, shown below, just a few meters above the lake. It has has a few signboards about animals in the area (in German) scattered around the whole lake. Or you can start on the path directly on the lake shore. The Lehrpfad joins up with the lake shore after a couple minutes, so it doesn’t matter where you start.

One of the info boards.

View of the lake from the Lehrpfad, which now makes it way down to the that little bridge on the lake.

On the south side of the lake.

Looking back toward the Berghaus where we started the hike.

Reaching the west side of the lake. There is a fire pit there, a nice place for a picnic.

Walking along the west side of the lake.

On the west side of the lake, you’ll see trail signs for longer hikes.

You can walk further west up this stream to a camping area with more fire pits, grassy field for sports and small swimming pool.

To keep on the Lehrpfad loop, just walk up to the road and follow the white Lehrpfad trail sign up into the forest as shown below. It’s only a few meters up this rocky road, then you turn right into the forest.

The forest path is not suitable for strollers, so take the road instead which parallels the forest trail as shown below and leads back to your starting point. The road is very lightly used and hikers are expected on the road.

Here is the path leading into the forest and the lumpy forest path.

So pretty in the forest, everything covered in lush green moss.

Lots of interesting rock formations along the trail.

More signboards and a few wooden sculptures.

The forest trail briefly joins the road at this great picnic area. I recommend stopping here. There are a few fire pits, a little stream to explore and lots of grass for running.

And of course, a fantastic view from the picnic area.

After your picnic, follow the trail back into the forest and follow it all the way back to your starting point.

Near the end, you’ll cross the road and join the lake shore again with lovely views across the lake to the start of the hike.

Hope you like it!
Don’t forget to Pin this for later…

Just in case anyone is heading there in the next day or two, we were there this afternoon and part of the path is flooded so you can’t do the complete loop of the lake. We started by the restaurant and walked anticlockwise but when we got to the south west corner of the lake we had to turn back. It was still very pretty though and we enjoyed it a lot!
Thanks for the helpful information. I suspect this happens occasionally after heavy rain as the path is so close to the water.
We did this walk with our 3 months old baby boy and loved it! We went there on a Wednesday, and the road was open, we parked right near the restaurant. Thanks a lot for a great post!
So glad you had a nice time! I think that the crowds have spread out a bit now that the gondolas are open. This lake should be rather quiet the rest of the season.
I was there on 10th May for Mother’s Day! Noway to drive to the lake, so left the car and hike to the lake. It was really long tough but so beautiful and I was grateful for this challenge. When I finally get down to the lake from the mountain it worth the effort…and I was lucky to get a lift down to Naffels
I am also extremely grateful to Tanya for her advice and for opening my eyes for hiking in Switzerland, thank you!!!
Sorry you couldn’t drive up to the lake. I’ve heard from others that they close the road on busy days. But glad you made it to the lake eventually and had a nice person give you a lift back down the mountain. Sounds like an exciting day!
Thanks for the post – great inspiration for travel!
Just wanted to post a small update. Currently (as of May 2020), the road from Näfels to the Obersee is closed unless you live or stay there (or came really early in the morning before the person in charge of closing the road). This is done because there were too many cars and that blocked the road several times – the road is pretty narrow, so if there are several cars in both directions it’s nearly impossible to drive through.
So, currently the only feasible option is to park the car in Näfels and walk / bike up to Obersee. The trail is not too steep, but quite long. Still rather beautiful, with waterfalls and nice view.
Thanks for the update! I know several people that drove up there a couple weeks ago, so this must have been a recent development or perhaps on weekends. The road is crazy narrow and makes me so nervous every time I go. We have always been in either bad weather or weekdays, so I don’t have the sunny weekend perspective. Thanks for taking the time to report back.
We did this today – gorgeous!! Thank you for the great recommendation.
So glad you enjoyed it!
We went today. Beautiful lake but still very high water so the path south of the lake is flooded. We followed the Lehrpfad but there was no route along the lake. We walked up the path 300m and found the ‘path’ down to the lake but there were still enough snow drifts and mud to make it too much for us (kids 9 & 11). Retraced our steps and had a picnic at the lake. Still a great day out.
Thanks for the report! Glad you still had a good time despite the flooding. Spring conditions are always unpredictable. We’ve had plenty of days like this, where we had turn back because of snow or mud. Hope your next outing goes smoother.
Any idea if you can swim here?
Great post – thanks for the fun idea! I love that it is so close to Zürich and the pictures are very beautiful.
