Last September, we camped on the shores of the Walensee, a lake southeast of Zurich, with surrounding by tall mountain peaks. The views from the campground are fantastic, which were especially nice at sunset and in the early morning. The location is very convenient because it’s so close to many mountain resorts, including Flumserberg, whose cable car was only a 10 minute drive from the campground. There is a little pebble beach for lounging and a diving platform you can swim to in warm weather. We particularly liked the fire pits along the lake shore, so we could cook dinner with a view instead of surrounded by other campers. We went in low season, so the campground was pretty empty and we didn’t have to book ahead. But in summer, best to call ahead and reserve a spot.

Location & Getting There
Camping Murg is located on the Walensee lake southeast of Zurich. It is easily accessible by car or public transportation.
To get here by car: From the A3, take exit 47-Murg and make your way to Strandbodenstrasse 16, 8877 Murg. There is parking at the camping entrance.
To get here by public transport: Take a train to Ziegelbrücke, then a train to Murg. The campground is a short walk from the train station.

As shown on this map, the camping is located on the southern lake shore. You can catch the ferry here to cruise the lake. It is centrally located to many mountain resorts and outdoor family activities, a few of our suggestions listed at the bottom of this post.

Services
Sorry I didn’t take pics of all the services. I was busy setting up camp and enjoying the view! But in short, there’s a kiosk and small cafe for snacks and simple meals. There’s a fountain for drinking water. There’s a small playground. The WC and showers were clean. They have all the normal campground facilities, like dish washing and laundry areas. You can request a pitch with power if necessary. We were rather self-contained and didn’t really take advantage of most of these services.
At the campground
There are two grassy areas for tents, one right on the lake shore in front of the cafe as shown below. There is a second grassy field behind the caravan spots, definitely not as nice. There were only four tents the night we were there in September, so we had free choice where to pitch. In busy season, you will be more limited.

There were a couple fire pits along the lake shore, a short walk east of the campground. This one had a picnic table, a grill, and wood.

Morning view.

You can swim from this pebble beach at the campground.

There is a diving platform a short distance from the shore.

Sunset at the campground, a great reason to camp.

Nearby activities
This campground is near many great family outings and mountain resorts.
Lake Ferry. You can take a ferry from the Murg station a short walk from the campground. See the ferry map and schedule here.

Waterfall Hike. If you want to hike, take the ferry to the north side of the lake where you can hike to the waterfalls. Go to Betlis for an easy theme trail for kids and go to Au or Quinten for a longer, harder hike.

Flumserberg Mountain Hike & Ropes Course. Flumserberg is the closest mountain, only a 4 minute drive or 12 min train ride to the cable car that will take you up to the resort. They have lots of fun family hikes and activities, including the “Wild Man” theme trail, the CLiiMBER ropes course, and an alpine coaster.
Bad Ragaz Heidi Trail. It’s only a 25 min drive to Bad Ragaz, where you can ride a cable car up to the popular Heidi trail, with interactive stations along the easy 4 km path. Read more…
Amden Panorama Trail. It’s a 20 min drive up to Amden, a village above the cliffs on the north side of the lake. They have a loop theme trail for children, which has great views of the lake and valley. We did the longer Höhenweg, which alternates between panorama views, dense forest, and lush moors.
